Winter presents a unique challenge.

The weather conditions can  leave it feeling tight, itchy, and dry. Outside, cold, harsh winds mercilessly strip away our skin's natural protective oils. Inside, central heating aggressively draws moisture out of the air and, consequently, from our skin. These conditions compromise our skin barrier, leading to a cascade of problems: dryness, flakiness, painfully chapped lips, and worsening of existing skin conditions.

Daily Defence: Building a Robust Skin Barrier

Lower Shower Heat & Duration

A very hot shower or bath may be detrimental to your skin. Hot water can strip away the precious natural oils that form your skin's protective lipid (fat) barrier. These oils are essential for locking in moisture and preventing skin barrier water loss.

What to do: Wash with lukewarm water and limit your shower or bath to under 10 minutes. This provides sufficient cleansing without compromising your skin's integrity.

Why it works: Cooler temperatures and shorter durations help preserve the lipid barrier, keeping your skin hydrated and protected.

Avoid Harsh Soaps & Use Gentle Cleansers

That "squeaky clean" feeling (like you get with traditional bar soaps or highly foaming body washes)  is a red flag. It indicates that your skin's natural oils and protective barrier have been stripped away. Many harsh soaps contain sulfates (like SLS) and alkaline pH levels that disrupt the skin's balance, leading to dryness and irritation.

What to do: Switch to gentle, soap-free, pH-balanced cleansers. Look for formulas designed for sensitive or dry skin. These cleansers effectively remove impurities without destroying the skin's natural balance.

Top Picks:

Why it works: Gentle cleansers respect the skin's natural pH and lipid structure, maintaining its protective function.

Obey the "3-Minute Rule"

The Golden Rule of Moisturizing: The time immediately following showering or bathing is crucial for effective moisturizer application. While your skin is still slightly damp, its pores are more open, and it's most able to absorb hydrating ingredients.

What to do: Apply a rich, emollient moisturizer within 3 minutes of finishing a shower or bath. This locks in the moisture from the water, preventing it from evaporating and taking your skin's natural moisture with it.

Top Picks: Top Picks: Epaderm Cream Pump 500gm, Epaderm Ointment Tub 500gm, Epaderm Emollient Ointment 125gm, Epaderm Cream 50gm

Why it works: This technique creates an occlusive barrier that seals in hydration This significantly improves skin softness and prevents dryness.

Targeting Common Winter Skin Problems

Even with a strong daily defence, winter can bring specific challenges that require targeted solutions:

Chapped Lips:

The Vulnerable Area: Unlike the rest of your skin, lips lack oil glands, making them vulnerable to environmental stressors. Cold winds, dry air, and even habitual lip licking contribute to chapped, cracked, and painful lips.

What to do: Stop the cycle of licking and use a protective lip balm. These balms create a physical barrier that prevents moisture loss and shields your lips from the elements. Apply frequently throughout the day, especially before going outside and before bed.

Product Picks:Blistex Relief Cream (medicated for active chapping), Carmex (a classic, providing a protective barrier), La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Lips (a repairing barrier balm), Vaseline Lip Therapy (simple, effective occlusion)

Dry, Cracked Hands:

The Everyday Battle: Our hands are constantly exposed to water (through frequent washing) and harsh weather, making them prone to extreme dryness and cracking. The constant washing strips natural oils, and cold air further dehydrates the skin.

What to do: Implement a two-step approach: use a gentle, soap-free hand wash and follow every wash with a heavy-duty hand cream. Before bed, apply a thick layer of a rich hand cream and consider wearing cotton gloves to enhance absorption overnight.

Product Picks:Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream (intensely hydrating, forms a protective film), O'Keeffe's Working Hands (specifically formulated for very dry, cracked skin), La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Mains (repairing and barrier-forming)

"Winter Itch" & Body Dryness: Upgrade Your Hydration: When lotions aren't cutting it, it's time to upgrade your body moisturiser. The sensation of "winter itch" is often a sign of significant dehydration and a compromised skin barrier.

Understanding Moisturiser Types:

ProductLotions:Creams:Ointments:
FormulationLightest formulationA balanced 50/50 oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsion, Thicker than lotionsVery thick, high oil content (often petrolatum or mineral oil based) with minimal water
Best ForGood for warm weather or naturally oilier skinThey provide better hydration and barrier support – making them ideal for general winter useThey create a strong occlusive barrier, making them highly effective for very dry, cracked, or compromised areas
ExamplesE45 Cream, Aveeno Daily Moisturising CreamHydromol, Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.
  • Switch from light lotions to richer emollient creams for daily body moisturising. For extremely dry or problematic areas, incorporate an ointment.

Product Picks:Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion, CeraVe Intensive Moisturising Cream for Dry to Very Dry Skin, Hydromol (highly effective for very dry, rough skin).

"Inside-Out" Support: Nourishing Your Skin from Within

Hydrate Adequately: While drinking water doesn't directly hydrate the outermost layer of your skin, it is crucial for overall bodily hydration, which in turn supports skin health at a cellular level.
Recommendation: Ensure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Herbal teas can also contribute to your fluid intake.

Vitamin D: Often referred to as the "sunshine vitamin," Vitamin D levels tend to drop significantly in winter due to reduced sunlight exposure. It plays a role in skin cell growth and repair, immune function, and has anti-inflammatory properties, all of which are beneficial for skin health.
What to do: Consider a daily Vitamin D supplement, especially if you live in a region with limited winter sun. (e.g., PharmaNord Bio-Vitamin D3, Solgar Vitamin D3 4000IU).

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These essential fatty acids are crucial components of healthy cell membranes, including those in the skin. They support the skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, and can improve overall skin hydration and elasticity.

Recommendation: Incorporate Omega-3-rich foods (fatty fish, flaxseed, walnuts) into your diet, or take a high-quality supplement. (e.g. MorEPA Smart Fats Fish Oil).
